Ajou University | Tumblr. I wrote a post a couple days ago that had general information about hospitals in South. Here are a few more details about my stay. I was in a 4- person room. Ajou University Hospital (AUH) has over 1,0. VIP rooms. The 6- person rooms are cheap–around $1. The VIP rooms are, well, a bit more expensive. I chose a 4- person room. It included 4 beds, a cabinet with a combination lock, en- suite bathroom, and even a small kitchen area with a sink and a full- size refrigerator. The 6- person rooms are much more crowded and didn’t have en- suite bathrooms or the kitchenette. As you can see, the hospital beds are a bit older–no automatic head or foot raising/lowering. That’s what the cranks at the foot of the bed are for. Something different from US hospitals is that little cot thing; each hospital bed also had a cot. It’s very common in Korea for family members to stay with patients in the hospital. The sons of two of my roommates spent the night and their wives came during the day. My third roommate was around my age and had a couple toddlers, so none of his family spent the night. I had a choice between Korean food and Western food. Korean food was about $1. Western food was around $3. I knew I wouldn’t be eating much, so I opted for Korean. My last solid meal was dinner Thursday night: I had to fast before the surgery, so I didn’t get to eat again dinner on Friday. I was still kinda out of it, so I didn’t take a photo. But I did take one of breakfast Saturday: milk, very salty beef broth, some kind of steamed egg thing the consistency of flan, and 미음 (mee- oom)–a ground rice gruel with the consistency of Elmer’s glue. Noticed I could see the dorms of my campus in the distance. One last thing: No hospital gowns with embarrassing gaps in the back! Instead I was given a set of heavy cotton pajamas. They were heavy enough I didn’t need a blanket at night. I saw a couple people whose tops opened at the shoulder, but those people always had something on their shoulders that made their tops necessary.
